Hindi Typing Practice Guide for UPSSSC PET and State Exams
Why Hindi Typing Matters for State Exams
Many Indian state government examinations require Hindi typing proficiency as a mandatory qualifying skill. Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) PET requires 25 WPM in Hindi. Madhya Pradesh CPCT requires 30 WPM in Hindi. Bihar SSC and Rajasthan RSMSSB also have Hindi typing components. For candidates from Hindi-speaking states, mastering Devanagari typing is essential for selection.
Understanding Mangal Unicode Font
Most government Hindi typing tests use Mangal Unicode font, which is the standard Devanagari font for government documents. Unlike Kruti Dev which uses legacy encoding, Mangal Unicode works on all modern computers and browsers. Simple Typing supports Mangal Unicode input directly, making practice seamless.
Hindi Keyboard Layouts
There are two main Hindi keyboard layouts: INSCRIPT (Indian Script) and Remington (Typewriter). INSCRIPT is the government-recommended layout and is supported on all Windows and Mac computers. For UPSSSC PET and CPCT, INSCRIPT is the standard. Practice on the same layout you will use in the actual exam.
Common Hindi Typing Challenges
Matras (vowel signs) are the biggest challenge for Hindi typists. The half-character (halant) requires pressing the halant key after a consonant. Compound characters like क्ष, त्र, and ज्ञ need special key combinations. Practice these extensively. Common government Hindi words include: सरकार, विभाग, अधिकारी, नियम, अनुच्छेद, आवेदन, and परीक्षा.
Practice Strategy for 25 WPM Target
Week 1-2: Learn the INSCRIPT layout. Practice individual characters and matras. Target 10-15 WPM. Week 3-4: Practice short sentences and paragraphs. Target 15-20 WPM. Week 5-6: Full passage practice with timing. Target 20-25 WPM. Daily practice of 40 minutes is recommended.
